1 day trip to Sukhothai Kingdom

This trip completely changed what I had imagined about this whimsical city, I have been to Ayuthaya (the ancient capital city of Thailand) before but Sukhothai in my opinion is more beautiful and attractive.

The Sukhothai Kingdom was the capital of the first kingdom of Siam which existed from 1238 to 1438 in the north central of Thailand. This historical city illustrated the beginning of the Thai architecture.

How to get to Sukhothai?
By plane: Bangkok Airways (they always have special promotions).
By train: Express train from Bangkok (approximately 7 hours)from Hua Lampong Train Station.
By bus: From Mo Chit Bus Terminal (approximately 6-7 hrs as well).

Where to start?
Sukhothai Historical Park

General info: Discover the history of the former capital of Thailand at this 70 square meter park which used to be the palaces, temples and homes to the ancient Sukhothai people. The main highlight of this park is, "Wat Mahathat" which features a magnificent seated bronze Buddha image cast in the Sukhothai style.

What to do? Rent a bicycle or a tuktuk in front of the entrance area to tour this park if you did not want to spend the day walking around in the heat. You will be provided by map which allows to explore from one monument to another.

Time & Admissions: Early in the morning as it gets hot during midday and in the afternoon. Opens from 6 am - 9 pm. Admission is 150 Baht ($4 - $5) for all. Check for more info HERE

How to get there: take a mini bus or Song Taew (2 row pick ups) in front of Sukhothai's municipality near the police booth or a tuk tuk which will cost you 50 -200 Baht ($2 - $7) from anywhere in Sukhothai to the park.

My experience:  It will be a wonderful experience if you choose to go there during the "Loy Krathong Festival" (floating decorated plates), it is usually celebrated in November according to the Thai Lunar calendar .

I went there during that time of the year in the morning to explore the park and at night to have dinner (which was organized by my hotel) to celebrate the Loy Krathong festival by watching a Thai dance, fireworks, floating Krathongs and Lanterns. It is a once in a lifetime experience that you will enjoy especially if you are in love with the South East Asian oriental culture.

 Next destination

Sukhothai Organic Farm

General info: This place is located near Sukhothai Airport area which was converted into a green area many years ago. A great place to experience organic agriculture and try out a Thai's farmer life. Lots of organic products to purchase and try out. There is also a home stay facility if you wished to stay longer.

Time & Admissions: depending on your reservation as there are various groups of students, organizations and tourists visiting this place daily. The best way is to reserve directly through their Official Website

How to get there: It will take you around half an hour travelling by car or bus to this place, you have to reserve a transportation through your hotel or guesthouse , the costs will vary according to the number of people travelling.

My experience: I love this place because I am interested in everything organic. You will be welcomed by a "Khao Hom" drink (Rice drink) which is very refreshing and then you be toured by the friendly and expert staff around the farm. You can experience farming, planting vegetables , feeding animals, cooking  and also riding a buffalo ! Dining is a MUST as the Thai dishes there are extremely mouth watering , you will also be able to make your own "Som tam" (Thai Papaya Salad).
